Residents and store owners in Chicago’s 1st and 12th Districts are on high alert after a series of brazen armed robberies targeting convenience stores. The Chicago Police Department has issued a warning following incidents in November and December where multiple gunmen stormed into local businesses to steal cash and merchandise before making their escape in stolen vehicles.
The suspects, described as 4-5 African American males ranging from 17 to 30 years old, all clad in black clothing, including black hooded sweatshirts, black ski masks, and gloves, have hit several locations with alarming regularity. The police released details of three specific incidents: one on the morning of November 24 on the 0-100 block of E. Lake Street at 6:57 a.m., another on the 800 block of W. Van Buren Street at 9:36 A.M. on December 3, and an evening robbery on the same day at 8:20 P.M. on the 0-100 block of North Wells Street.
In a statement obtained by the Chicago Police Department, authorities urge businesses to ramp up their security measures, including installing working video surveillance systems and hold-up alarms. They’re also calling on the community to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities or vehicles that might be lurking in the area.
Additionally, victims and witnesses are implored to contact 911 immediately with as much information as possible. Providing detailed descriptions of the offenders, including any distinguishing physical traits or clothing, along with vehicle descriptions and license plate numbers, can be crucial in apprehending the suspects. In their crime alert, the police have asked businesses to be aware of these crimes and to alert others in the area to the threat posed by these armed robbers.
