Roll Call’s Mary C. Curtis Wins First Place Award From the National…

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Wednesday, August 16, 2023 – FiscalNote Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: NOTE) (“FiscalNote”), a leading AI-driven enterprise SaaS technology provider of policy and global intelligence, congratulates Roll Call’s Mary C. Curtis for being honored by the National Federation of Press Women, winning first place in the organization’s national communications contest in the Opinion category, after winning at the regional level.

Her winning column, What it means to be ‘surprised’ by the massacre at Highland Park, prompted judges to state her writing is an “excellent dissection of the differences in reaction from many Americans when a mass shooting occurs someplace presumed safe … The columnist writes well and clearly and makes her point powerfully. Very well done! A standout in an extremely competitive category.”

In addition, Curtis was also recognized by the National Society of Newspaper Columnists, winning first place in the general online column category and honorable mention in crisis commentary. The organization last year awarded her with its Ernie Pyle Lifetime Achievement Award. Curtis was also honored in June by the Washington, D.C., chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, winning a D.C. Dateline Award, her fourth time garnering a First Place award in that contest.

The awards honored a collection of her Roll Call columns, in which she regularly comments on the intersection of politics, culture, and race.

“Year after year, Mary’s unparalleled journalism and unique voice tackles difficult topics with meticulous detail and analysis. Her contributions to Roll Call speak to the core of our mission: incisive and thought-provoking prose, holding our leaders accountable, and making sense of the complicated news and difficult questions that dominate our world each day. Mary’s writing is part of the reason why our newsroom is trusted by policymakers and Congressional offices across the political spectrum, and relied upon by the public for essential news about government, policy, and politics. Congratulations to Mary on yet another year of well-deserved recognitions, awards, and accolades,” said Jason Dick, Editor in Chief, CQ and Roll Call.

In her career as a columnist, reporter and editor, Curtis has won many honors and accolades, including 10 Clarion Awards from the Association for Women in Communications, National Headliner awards, four first-place Salute to Excellence awards from the National Association of Black Journalists, and the Thomas Wolfe Award for a narrative report on Confederate heritage groups.

Curtis was chosen to be included in The HistoryMakers, the single largest archival collection of its kind in the world designed to promote and celebrate the successes and to document movements, events and organizations that are important to the African American community and to American society; it is available digitally and permanently archived in the Library of Congress.

Each year, the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW), the National Society of Newspaper Columnists and the D.C. Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists honors excellence in journalism. The Washington, D.C. Chapter’s Dateline Awards recognizes print, digital, and broadcast journalists in the greater D.C. metropolitan area, including Northern Virginia and Maryland.
