Highlighting recent legislative advancements, a momentous bill (S.1163-A/SANDERS, identical to A.7691/Solages) aimed at creating the New York State Community Commission on Reparations Remedies has successfully passed both the Senate and the Assembly during this legislative session. The bill now awaits the signature of Governor Kathy Hochul. This crucial legislation serves to acknowledge the deep-seated injustices, brutality, and inhumanity of slavery that have scarred the history of New York City and the State itself. Once enacted, this bill will establish a Commission tasked with researching the enduring impacts of slavery and its aftermath in New York, while also offering recommendations for appropriate reparations. If signed, this action would make New York the second state in the nation, after California, to institute a dedicated reparations commission.
