Fire outside of recycling facility emits black smoke in Bernalillo County

BERNALILLO COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) — A fire has started outside of a plastic recycling facility. It’s emitting black smoke south of Albuquerque.

Bernalillo County Fire Rescue (BCFR) said a fire started outside of the facility in the 5300 block of Hawking Drive around 2:38 p.m. The building was evacuated.

BCFR and Albuquerque Fire Rescue (AFR) are on the scene.

AFR said the fire involves “structures, product, and vehicles” and warned the public to stay away from Bobby Foster Road and University Blvd SE.

No flights have been impacted by the fire, the ABQ Sunport stated. The city’s Environmental Health Dept. advised staying inside with windows and doors closed for respiratory health.

At 5 p.m., a health alert was issued for the Albuquerque and Bernalillo County residents due to “smoke [that] contains hazardous air pollutants.” It expires at 10 a.m. on Monday.

In the alert, officials said: “This smoke is unhealthy for everyone, and people should limit outdoor activity tonight in Albuquerque and Bernalillo County.”
