Evanston’s reparations program tops $1 million

EVANSTON (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The City of Evanston’s Reparations Committee is celebrating what it says is a milestone in its commitment to making up for past historical injustices in the Black community.

The City’s Local Reparations Restorative Housing program aims to rectify past discriminatory housing policies in the city, through homeownership preservation, stability, and growth for intergenerational equity in the Black community.

The Reparations Committee says it’s now distributed over a million dollars in reparations funds through the program.

In addition, another $439,000 is pending to be used in mortgage assistance, construction, and remodeling projects.

The Reparations Committee has met with 76 out of 140 verified Ancestor reparations recipients.
