Dallas Teams Up for Black History Celebration Focused on Mental Health and Wellbeing

In an effort to shine a light on mental health and overall wellbeing within the Black community, The City of Dallas’ Office of Equity and Inclusion (OEI) is teaming up with Dallas County and MetroCare Services for a trailblazing Black History Celebration. As per the announcement, the event on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, aims to tackle the systemic problems faced by marginalized groups, a commitment that grew out of Dallas County’s 2020 declaration of racism as a public health crisis.

From 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the African American Museum located at 3536 Grand Avenue in Dallas, the public is invited to engage with a panel of local experts and access resources dedicated to mental health, wellness, and racial disparities within the community. In an effort to be inclusive, the event will also be streamed live online via City of Dallas TV – with channel 16 providing the English broadcast and channel 95 for Spanish interpretation.

Open to community members, the gathering seeks to empower youth, families, and other stakeholders with information and strategies for self-care. This occasion underscores the importance of recognizing the unique mental health challenges that disproportionately affect the Black population, and offers direct access to insights and local supports needed to improve these conditions.

Media partners who are looking to capture the event in action must register at dal.city/BHMWellbeing and have prior communication with the City of Dallas’ Communications, Outreach and Marketing (COM) Department. Interviews will be available solely to those who have scheduled them either before the event kicks off or after its conclusion, according to protocols set by COM. The African American Museum serves as both the backdrop and the beacon of this significant community engagement effort, a place which embodies the history and the resiliency of a people who have fought for justice and equity throughout generations.
