Black-legged ticks reported in parts of Montana, raising health concerns

MONTANA – With temperatures rising and outdoor activities increasing, the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services has reported that black-legged ticks have been identified in the state for the first time.

Three black-legged ticks were recently found in Dawson and Sheridan counties. These ticks are commonly found in the northeastern United States and have been expanding into other states.

The presence of these ticks in Montana could lead to an increase in tick-borne illnesses. To prevent tick bites, experts recommend using an EPA-registered insect repellent and conducting frequent tick checks.

They also suggest keeping a pair of tweezers handy, drying clothes for at least 10 minutes after being outdoors, and showering regularly.

For pet owners, it’s important to monitor furry companions and consult a veterinarian about tick prevention products.
