The Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater will commemorate 110 years of history, culture, and entertainment excellence on Nov. 18, at the iconic theater located at 819 NW Second Ave., in Miami.
Under the theme “The Crown of Overtown,” the Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater is celebrating this historic milestone, paying tribute to its timeless legacy as a cherished community staple. The Lyric Theater opened in 1913, quickly becoming a major gathering place for the African American community in Miami, serving as a community space, vaudeville playhouse, movie theater and finally, a church.
“This milestone highlights the strong legacy of the Historic Lyric Theater propelled by the mission of the Black Archives,” said Kamila Pritchett, executive director of The Black Archives History & Research Foundation of South Florida Inc.
“We encourage everyone to save the date and plan to join us for this unforgettable celebration, and see why it is important for us to continue to preserve and protect our community’s historic spaces,” Pritchett added.

The Black Archives History & Research Foundation of South Florida is a photographic and manuscript archival research repository dedicated to documenting the history of people of the African Diaspora in Miami-Dade County from 1896 to the present. Founded in 1977, the Black Archives became one of the largest repositories for the history of Blacks in Miami-Dade County.
The non-profit organization is housed at the Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater (BAHLT) Cultural Arts Complex, a historic landmark on the National Register of Historic Places built in 1913. The Black Archives explores universal themes of respect for human differences, responsible citizenship, human dignity, education and community building through the lens of the black experience. It promotes mutual respect and understanding and inspire the appreciation of black culture, arts, history, and entertainment.
