‘Wellness Day’ highlights importance of Black men taking charge of health

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Saturday marked Black men’s Wellness Day at the Norton Healthcare Sports and Learning Center in west Louisville.

Hosted by the African American Male Wellness Agency, the event addressed health disparities in the Black community and to empower men to live healthier lifestyles.

The event offered free screenings, wellness and career resources and a 5K walk/run.

Black men in America, as a group, have the lowest life expectancy in the country as high blood pressure and hypertension are among the top causes.

According to AAMWA, more than 100 Black men found out during screenings they had high blood pressure based on 2023 data.

Data for this year’s event has not yet been released.

WHAS11 has highlighted the importance of primary care with the Color of Health – a series of stories about some of the illnesses and diseases that have proven to be top killers of Black men.

Former NFL star and two-time Super Bowl champion Deion Branch served as the honorary chair of the event.
