Amid a significant diversity gap in the mental health industry, with only 3-5% of therapists in the United States being Black, Wasabi & Well emerges as a beacon of hope and empowerment. Founded by Dr. Michelle Wiltshire, this Black-owned wellness space is dedicated to offering individual and couples therapy, community events, and wellness courses, all facilitated by a team of Black women therapists. The mission is clear: to provide a safe, understanding, and empowering environment for Black women to address their mental health needs.
Addressing the Diversity Gap in Mental Health Care
The lack of representation in the mental health field has long been a barrier for Black women seeking therapy. Wasabi & Well, understanding this gap, aims to create a space where Black women can feel seen, heard, and understood. The wellness center not only offers traditional therapy sessions but also focuses on community support groups and live wellness courses. This approach allows clients to develop essential life skills, including self-reflection, effective problem-solving, and stress reduction, in a supportive environment.
Empowering Black Women Through Tailored Therapy
Dr. Michelle Wiltshire, with her Caribbean background, brings a unique perspective to her practice. Recognizing the specific challenges that Black women face, such as racism, microaggressions, and struggles with self-worth, Wasabi & Well is designed to address these issues head-on. The wellness center’s approach is multifaceted, offering not just therapy but also a platform for community engagement and personal growth. By doing so, Wasabi & Well not only assists in healing from past traumas but also in rediscovering a healthy sense of self.
Breaking Stigmas and Making Mental Health Care Accessible
One of Wasabi & Well’s core missions is to break the stigma surrounding mental health care in the Black community and make therapy more accessible. By accepting major insurances and offering immediate openings, the wellness center takes significant steps towards this goal. The presence of Wasabi & Well represents a movement towards fostering self-care and empowerment within the Black community, encouraging more individuals to seek the help they need without fear of judgment or misunderstanding.
In a world where the mental health industry often overlooks the unique experiences of Black women, Wasabi & Well stands out as a revolutionary force. By prioritizing the needs and well-being of Black women through tailored therapy and community support, this wellness space is not just addressing a gap—it’s breaking barriers. As Wasabi & Well continues to grow and support its community, it serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of representation and accessibility in mental health care.
