Virginia State University is pleased to announce Delegate Luke Torian as the fall 2023 commencement speaker. Delegate Torian has served in the Virginia House of Delegates since 2009, representing the 52nd district.
He has been an influential figure in Virginian politics and a tireless advocate for education, affordable housing, and criminal justice reform. Since being elected, Delegate Torian has passed more than 40 pieces of legislation.
In 2020, the Virginia Governmental Employees Association recognized Delegate Torian as their Legislator of the Year. That same year, he became the first African American to serve as chair of the House Appropriations Committee, which oversees the state’s annual budget. He held the position until 2022.
Delegate Torian’s career stretches beyond politics, with a steadfast commitment to community support and spiritual leadership. He has been a minister for over 35 years and has been a pastor for First Mount Zion Baptist Church in Dumfries, Virginia since 1995.
The University believes Delegate Torian’s political accomplishments, coupled with his dedication to service and leadership, make him an ideal choice to inspire the graduating class at VSU’s fall commencement.
Virginia State University will hold its fall 2023 Commencement Ceremonies on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at 9:00 am in the VSU Multipurpose Center.
