TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa Birth Equity Initiative is holding events to recognize Black Maternal Health Week.
“This is just a time the rest of the nation pauses and recognizes what’s happening and tries to raise awareness,” said Omare Jimmerson, executive director for the Tulsa Birth Equity Initiative.
Jimmerson said April 11- 17 is Black Maternal Health Week.
The CDC says black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy related causes than white women. They say the reasons may vary from racism, to underlying conditions, to the quality of healthcare.
“It’s unfortunate that we are one of the only developed countries with rates that are off the charts,” said Jimmerson.
She said this week is about raising awareness and support for black mothers, and they have events all week.
The events start Thursday night with a seminar to talk about health equality in childbirth. Saturday they are hosting a block party at lacy park and next Tuesday they’re holding a queens village community baby shower.
“That one is specifically for black moms. To create a safe space for them,” said Jimmerson.
Jimmerson said it’s important to have a week like this.
“I think getting people back into a space of understanding, that no matter what you look like as a woman, when it comes to birthing the woman’s voice needs to be central to the care being provided,” said Jimmerson.
She said the Tulsa birthing institute focuses year round on helping women have good birthing experiences.
“We provide no cost services to specific populations and we also trauma doula to go back to their communities they identify with,” said Jimmerson.
