The annual Black History Month celebration at Lawrence High School on February 24 spotlighted the remarkable contributions of four distinguished individuals, including the founder of the African American Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey and an African-born entrepreneur. This event not only showcased Black-owned businesses but also featured performances and speeches centered on the theme ‘Black Resilience: Upward and Onward.’
Empowering Performances and Inspirational Speeches
The celebration began with an exhibition of Black-owned businesses in the Lawrence High School Commons, followed by a feast of cultural delicacies. The program then transitioned to the auditorium where attendees were treated to a series of empowering performances by the school’s choirs and bands. The highlight of the event was a keynote speech by Rev. Charles Boyer, who emphasized the importance of education as a tool against injustice and the significance of learning about Black heroes.
Trailblazers Recognized for Their Contributions
During the event, four ‘trailblazers’ were honored for their significant contributions to the community and beyond. John Harmon was recognized for his role in establishing the African American Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey, while Bernice Flynn-Addo was celebrated for her entrepreneurial success with AfriPrintz. Lance Lopez and Dionne Hallback were also acknowledged for their impactful work in veteran and community recruitment, and higher education, respectively. The ceremony included a poignant tribute to the late Pastor James Clarke Jr., remembered for his legacy of love, faith, and service.
