First, in case you don’t know: what is Juneteenth? And why do we celebrate it?

Juneteenth celebrates and commemorates June 19th, 1865. On this date, Union troops finally arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that the Civil War had ended and the enslaved people there had already been freed by the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been purposely ignored by Texas enslavers. This long-overdue and momentous day has since been celebrated as a day of liberation, called ‘Juneteenth’ or ‘Freedom Day.’ It is a National Holiday.
