Teenage twin entrepreneurs looking to expand their Black-owned business after opening a shoe store

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Twin boys from Fern Creek High School decided to take a different route after high school.

Instead of going straight to college, the two decided to join forces and open up a brick and mortar store for their shoe business.

From editing videos, to selling your favorite kicks, Taylan and Tylan Walker started from humble beginnings and now they’re hoping to create a shoe enterprise.

At the age of 13, Taylan and Tylan knew they had a different purpose in life.

Taylan discovered his love for cameras and videography, while Tylan took a deep dive in his love for restoring and buying shoes.

Together, they saw a market they could thrive in.

”Shoes and videos are a big market, especially in this time right now. People really want the best kicks, the best clothes the best videos and so we might as well take advantage of it,” shared Taylan Walker. “It’s the best thing to do for real for real.”

It was a love that outgrew their surroundings until their grandmother suggested they make a change.

”When I was in my house I was getting a bunch of shoes and I was getting more and more shoes until like I was getting to the point where I needed to change locations because I had too many shoes in the house basically,” Tylan Walker explained.

The two had been saving up their money from restoring and cleaning shoes, as well as gaining success in the buy and resale market, but the transition to the store wasn’t as easy as they thought it would be.

”It was a little hard and a little difficult really because of money, trying to pay monthly and get people in here so we can pay every month,” Tylan Walker said. “So basically we just tried to get like the best kicks and the newest shoes so they can sell.”

So, they took to social media.

They used Tylan’s business savvy and Taylan’s video and editing skills to boost their brand into something people would want to check out.

”It’s really just about being consistent in like anything you do you just got to be consistent,” said Tylan Walker. “So if you just keep being consistent you can really be anything you want.”

They do more than just sell shoes. The two say they want to help build their community, one sole at a time.

”We be giving back to the community sometimes with younger or older people who come and walk past our store,” shared Taylan Walker. “If we see them and they’re in need, we’ll throw them a pair of shoes because we like just giving back.”

And while they’re still building their clientele, and have expanded to clothes and accessories, they feel the sky is the limit to what they can achieve.

”I see ourselves expanding to either a different place or like the mall or a bigger place or even like a different state to get more exposure,” Tylan Walker expressed.

If you want to see all that they have to offer you can check them out Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 5023 Poplar Level Road in the Newburg Neighborhood.

Both Tylan and Taylan say they hope to further their education to help their business grow.
