ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – More than two weeks after the St. Louis City Reparations Commission held its last meeting, their official recommendations are final.
The commission recommends payments to anyone in the city who can trace their ancestry back to slavery, or current or former Black residents. It also calls for payments of up to $25,000 for former residents (or their direct descendants) of the Pruitt-Igoe Housing Project or Mill Creek Valley neighborhood.
The commission wants the city to use police funds on restorative justice programs or mental health response teams. It also wants Missouri to expunge the records of anybody convicted of a non-violent crime due to racial injustice, such as drug crimes.
It is up to the mayor and Board of Aldermen to decide what to do.
