Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital recognized for Black maternal health outcomes

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital has been recognized by U.S News and World Report for the exceptional outcomes in supporting Black maternal health. Sentara is just one of 26 hospitals across the country to be noticed.

The hospital says even though it is proud of this recognition, there’s still a need to reduce factors that contribute to pregnancy-related complications and death for black women.

“With Black women facing a three times higher rate of pregnancy related complications to their white counterparts,” Jennifer Wray with Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital said, “There remains a significant amount of work to be done.”

Sentara is committed to advancing Black maternal health outcomes through multiple initiatives. They include involving patients in the decision-making process and having continuous health disparities education and training for hospital staff.

“[In the future, Sentara wants] to ensure that we address and reduce these disparities in not only health outcomes, but also birth experiences for these patients,” Wray said.
