Rodent poop, ‘black residue,’ rotten lettuce: Madison County’s worst restaurant health scores

Huntsville, we have a rodent poop problem.

Four restaurants that scored 84 or below when they were visited by a Madison County health inspector in February were cited for “rodent feces,” according to county Health Department data.

Restaurants scoring 84 or below have to be reinspected within 60 days.

Eighteen establishments in Madison County have scores of 84 and below. Here they are, in order of highest to lowest score:

Chevron Express II

7551 Wall Triana Hwy., Madison

Score: 84

Inspection date: Feb. 14

A spicy chicken sandwich was kept at improper temperatures.

The interior ice machine had residue and a bottle of chemicals did not have a label.

Envy Entertainment & Restaurant

200-J Oakwood Ave., Huntsville

Score: 84

Inspection date: Feb. 15

The ice machine and the bar nozzles had buildup.

Paper towels and soap were missing at several sinks.

Chemical bottles were not properly labeled.

Juhi Food Mart

5208-A Moores Mill Rd., Huntsville

Score: 83

Inspection date: Feb. 8

Rodent feces were discovered in cabinets and throughout the storage room where soda syrups were being stored.

The ice machine’s interior was dirty as well as soda nozzles.

There was also no soap or paper towels in the bathroom hand sink.

Rat droppings were found in dry storage.

Chicken strips and chicken in a metal pan were stored at inappropriate temperatures.

The drive-thru’s soda nozzles were dirty along with the interior of the ice machine.

The person in charge could not provide signed employee health reporting agreements for all food service workers.

Fried fish, corn dogs and raw chicken were stored at inappropriate temperatures.

Inspection date: Feb. 6

Tomatoes, lettuce, ham and veggie loaves were being kept at inappropriate temperatures.

Multiple plastic lids were cracked or scratched on the food contact surface.

Soda nozzles at both the drive-thru area and the lobby were dirty, as were tea nozzles.

Inspection date: Feb. 7

Unprotected raw steak was stored directly on the freezer shelf.

Chicken tenders, chicken, potato wedges and fish were stored at inappropriate temperatures.

A chemical bottle was missing a label.

Inspection date: Feb. 22

There was no soap at a hand sink. Utensils and dishes were found in the same sink.

Several items were out of temperature, including Swiss cheese, bleu cheese, butter, meat loaf and gravy mixed with beef and cooked mushrooms.

Gogobapa LLC

3310 Meridian St. NE, Huntsville

Score: 81

Inspection date: Feb. 2

Gogobapa was cited for a dirty ice machine, not having test strips to test the concentration of sanitizing solution, not having a thermometer and for the employee hand sink not having hot having hot enough water.

Inspection date: Feb. 13

Dirty bread liners were stored with clean ones.

Cheese and meatballs were kept at inappropriate temperatures.

Zaxby’s

Inspection date: Feb. 13

Rotten lettuce had a discard date of Jan. 28 – it should have been thrown out two weeks before the inspector visited.

The ice machine’s interior was dirty and transferring residue.

Multiple sinks didn’t have paper towels or soap.

Soda nozzles on the drink machine had “black buildup.”

Several knife blades were broken.

Water at the women’s bathroom sink was not hot enough.

A chemical bottle was not properly labeled.

Jet Pep, BC Services LLC

11543 Hwy. 231/431 N., Meridianville

Score: 77

Inspection date: Feb. 7

An inspector found rodent feces in a bathroom cabinet.

There was also no hot water in the bathroom sink and no dish sanitizer anywhere on the premises.

The soda nozzles and the interior of the ice machine were dirty.

The ice machine’s interior was also “not smooth and cleanable,” with the inspector reporting “rust, cracks, deep scratches present” on the food contact surface.

Mi Puebla Taqueria #2

1392 Jordan Rd. Suite D, Huntsville

Score: 76

Inspection date: Feb. 21

Mi Puebla Taqueria was cited for failure to have a clear and understandable date marking system and failure to meet cooling times due to improper cooling methods.

The warewashing sink flooded the kitchen with wastewater due to poor drain design.

Major League Wings #4

3310 Meridian St., Huntsville

Score: 75

Inspection date: Feb. 1

Major League Wings had chicken and ranch dressing stored at an unacceptably low temperatures, according to the inspector’s report.

It also had no test strips to test the concentration of sanitizing solution and the hot water in the employee bathroom was not hot enough.

851 Ryland Pike, Huntsville

Score: 72

Inspection date: Feb. 13

Rodent feces were discovered “throughout cabinets under soda fountain and in the room behind the soda fountain,” the inspector noted.

Multiple hand sinks were missing soap in the kitchen, and the warewashing area sink was inoperable.

Two septic lids were unsecured.

Soda nozzles were dirty and the interior of the ice machine was rusty and transferring residue.
