Rochester’s inaugural Black Maternal Health Walkathon highlights resources and awareness

Rochester, N.Y. — Dozens braved the rain and wind to participate in the First Annual Black Maternal Health Walkathon to help ensure safe pregnancies.

The walkathon took place on Saturday morning at Genesee Valley Park.

The event marked Black Maternal Health Week and aimed to educate people on the maternal mortality rate and the resources available to the community.

“It feels amazing knowing that nothing is stopping our community from coming out and bringing awareness, talking about solutions together, and just coming together and celebrating Black maternal health,” said Jasmine Brewer, Healthy Baby Network.

The walkathon was organized by the Healthy Baby Network in Rochester, Fidelis Care, and Monroe County. Mayor Malik Evans was there to offer opening remarks and to lead the walkers on their way.
