Roaches and ‘heavy black slime’: Jefferson County’s lowest restaurant health scores in September

You can call them the baker’s dirty dozen.

Thirteen restaurants scored 85 or below on their Jefferson County Health Department inspections in September.

Scores below 85 mean an establishment gets a repeat visit from an inspector within 60 days.

Infractions ranged from foods being kept at inappropriate temperatures — which puts patrons at risk for illness — to roaches to storing food in non-food-grade containers, like grocery bags.

Here are those restaurants, in descending order:

Neighbors Pies

6200 Grand River Pkwy., Leeds

Score: 81

Inspection date: Sept. 12

Deviled eggs were out of temperature.

Several food handlers were overdue for safety training.

The sanitization rinse of the kitchen dish machine tested negative for chlorine.

Edgar’s Bakery

5215 Peridot Pl., Hoover

Score: 80

Inspection date: Sept. 25

Multiple meats were not date marked correctly.

Not all certified food safety managers were registered with the health department.

There were no paper towels at the handwashing sink.

Golden Rule BBQ

2504 Crestwood Blvd., Irondale

Score: 80

Inspection date: Sept. 4

A “heavy accumulation of dripping grease” was found on the ventilation hood system in the front area.

A knife was soiled with food residue and the plastic bowl on the bottom shelf of clean utensils was soiled with food debris near the front fry grill.

Several foods were out of temperature.

Taboon Noon O Kabab

1550 Montgomery Hwy., Hoover

Score: 79

Inspection date: Sept. 19

The restaurant wasn’t using a food thermometer.

There was no certified food safety manager on duty.

Several foods in the walk-in cooler were not date marked.

J Wings

1709 Decatur Hwy., Fultondale

Score: 77

Inspection date: Sept. 10

Boneless wings were partially cooked and left out without any cooling.

Chicken wings were out of temperature.

A sign indicating the country of origin for farm-raised or wild-caught fish was not in public view.

Taste of Thailand

3321 Lorna Rd., Hoover

Score: 77

Inspection date: Sept. 6

The bar soda gun had an accumulation of mold.

Food debris was noticed on the floor and walls “throughout the facility.”

Several foods were out of temperature.

Ninja Japanese Sushi & Steak House

4847 Promenade Pkwy., Bessemer

Score: 76

Inspection date: Sept. 9

Sushi staff were handling peeled cucumbers with their bare hands.

“Heavy black slime” was found inside the ice machine.

Seafood was out of temperature.

Auntie Anne’s Pretzels

2000 Riverchase Galleria, Hoover

Score: 75

Inspection date: Sept. 12

Pretzel dough in the reach-in cooler was stored inside grocery bags.

The inside of the ice machine and ice chute had black residue.

The front hand sink had “black slime” on the faucet handles.

Corner Food & Fuel

2940 Corner Rd., Warrior

Score: 73

Inspection date: Sept. 12

Multiple live roaches were seen in the back storage area near the three-compartment sink.

Several boxes of food stored in the deep freezers were uncovered.

Soda nozzles and the ice chute had a buildup of residue.

The bathroom did not have hand soap.

Shoney’s

1234 Boots Blvd., Fultondale

Score: 70

Inspection date: Sept. 20

Several foods were out of temperature.

The bottom interior of the reach-in beer cooler was “soiled with residue.”

The fronts of make tables had “mildew accumulation.”

Grease was accumulating on the fryers.

The dish machine wasn’t pumping sanitizer.

The walk-in freezer had a condensate leak.

Boston Fish Supreme

4201 Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. North, Birmingham

Score: 59

Inspection date: Sept. 23

Dead roaches were seen “throughout the premises” — inside the make table and the corners around the lid of the reach-in freezer, among other locations.

Raw fish was stored in the reach-in freezer in the middle of the kitchen without any packaging.

No employees had valid food safety training.

The interior of the ice machine was “soiled with residue” and an “accumulation of residue and debris” was found on the outside of equipment.

There was “excessive litter” around the dumpster.

Alabama Halal Food Int.

3150 Lorna Rd., Hoover

Score: 57

Inspection date: Sept. 18

The establishment added walls and equipment and prepared food in the back of the facility despite not having a permit.

Several foods in the reach-in freezer were stored at inappropriate temperatures, were not date marked and/or were stored without labels.

Uncovered food was stowed in the reach-in freezer in the back storage area.

Not all food safety managers were registered with the county.

Landing Strip Bar & Grill – Clarion Hotel

5216 Messer Airport Hwy., Birmingham

Score: 52

Inspection date: Sept. 16

Dead insects were found in a trap underneath the sink.

There were holes in the wall behind the ice machine and in the ceiling.

Small speckled eggs were stored in an Amazon box.

Grocery bags were used to store food.

There was a “heavy accumulation of mold and mildew” inside the ice machine.

Utensils in food storage had melted handles.
