President-Elect Donald Trump’s upcoming second administration has folks on edge wondering what he will implement next. According to a resurfaced video, it sounds like Trump is planning to bring reparations to the U.S. federally — but it’s far from what we consider reparations.
In a video released July 2023 on his website, Trump detailed his plans on impacting higher education. A portion of the video has since resurfaced on X/Twitter.
“I will advance a measure to have them fined up to the entire amount of their endowment. A portion of the seized funds will then be used as restitution for victims of these illegal and unjust policies,” Trump said, in part.
Black Twitter has interpreted his promises as reparations for white people who have “suffered” from racial discrimination or DEI teachings like critical race theory.
“Trump announces reparations for white people. He says he will ask the Justice Department to penalize colleges that consider diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) and fine them so he can pay restitution to white people who he considers the real victims of racial discrimination,” Keith Boykin tweeted.
He plans to fine institutions that educate about “racial discrimination” and use those fines as restitution for those affected. But, Trump’s idea of racial discrimination is the banning of critical race theory which is outlined in the Project 2025 plan.
“Trump is about to pay reparations to white people who have suffered ‘racial discrimination’ due to ‘diversity initiatives’ in higher education. This is exactly why ideas such as ‘Black people can be racist toward whites’ have to be shut down. They’re about to institutionalize that,” a user on X tweeted.
Black Americans have longingly awaited their turn for slavery reparations. The U.S. government has given Japanese families placed in internment camps during World War II and American families who lost loved ones during 9/11 reparations. But, when it comes to Black people, the government still stalls.
“I’d like to hear from the Black people that voted for him because they felt he’d provide ‘tangibles for Black Americans’ & believed he’d consider reparations for Black Americans…and [whose] argument was always ‘he gave money to HBCUs’ which….isn’t….true,” another user on X tweeted in response to the video.
Others believe that reparations was not Trump’s intent at all.
“Go to the search tab & search for ‘Trump reparations for white people’. It’s the new talking point that they’re trying to make go viral. Nowhere did Trump say anything about giving reparations to anyone. He wants to end all racial discrimination practices disguised as DEI,” a user on X tweeted.
