Prominent Florence newspaper owner, community leader passes away

The well-known owner of a Florence newspaper that caters to the African-American community died on Sunday, Oct. 22.

Larry Smith owned The Community Times newspaper.

Reverend Leo Woodberry, of Florence, was one of Smith’s longtime good friends and reflected on Smith’s work.

His work went beyond this community. He had major influence nationally, with major organizations. The articles that he printed weren’t just about local issues, but national and international issues.

Smith’s obituary said, “His goal was to provide information on politics, self-help, and economic development as it relates to the Black community. He continued to provide the same type of information for 40 years to a broader African American audience and an expanded reading community.”
