A US political activist and state representative will be the keynote speaker at the Progressive Labour Party’s 60th anniversary gala on Saturday.

Justin Jones, 28, was elected as the Democratic member of the Tennessee House of Representatives last year and is the second youngest member of the State House.

Mr Jones rose to prominence after he and another representative were expelled from Tennessee House after leading protests on gun control reform and joining protests in the chamber’s public galleries while the House was in session.

Dubbed by his supporters as one of the ‘Tennessee Three’ Mr Jones was reinstated to the House after the expulsions gained national attention.

The son of a Filipina mother and an African-American father, Mr Jones was born in Oakland, California. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Fisk University, in Nashville, Tennessee.

In a statement, the PLP said: “Bermudians can expect a captivating and timely address from Mr Jones.

“Additionally, the PLP’s Class of 1998 will be honoured as the party remembers the election of the first PLP Government 25 years ago.”

The gala will be held at the Hamilton Princess and Beach Club on November 18.

Tickets are available here, by calling the party’s headquarters on 292 2264, or from the Reginald A. Burrows Building on Court Street.
