*OWN, through its health initiative OWN Your Health, has partnered with the American Cancer Society’s VOICES of Black Women campaign.
This longitudinal study focuses on understanding cancer risks and outcomes among Black women. The campaign aims to engage 100,000 Black women aged 25-55 to help inform strategies for better cancer prevention, treatment, and overall health outcomes for this community.
“We are honored to support VOICES of Black Women in the mission to understand cancer risks and outcomes for Black women, and to provide the essential resources and platform needed to achieve its goal,” said Tina Perry, President OWN, per the news release.
“Partnering with the American Cancer Society allows us to harness the significant power of OWN’s reach — across our linear, social and digital footprint — to support the shared goals of OWN Your Health and the VOICES of Black Women campaign,” Perry added.
“Despite significant strides in cancer research, Black women continue to have the highest death rate and the shortest survival of any racial or ethnic group in the U.S. for most cancers,” said Dr. Wayne A.I. Frederick, interim chief executive officer of the American Cancer Society and the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN).
Frederick continued, “The public’s participation in our previous population studies has contributed to landmark discoveries. Partnering with Black women to listen and better understand their diverse lived experiences will give us the valuable data we need to develop tailored solutions.”
The OWN Your Health campaign aims to improve the health of Black women by offering resources, education, and community support. Its key goals are to encourage Black women to prioritize their health, address physical, mental, and emotional well-being, and empower them with tools to take proactive steps toward wellness.
Beginning Wednesday, March 5, OWN will launch a dedicated web page, OWN.tv/Voices, with information about the American Cancer Society’s VOICES of Black Women campaign and information on how to join the VOICES study, per the news release. A dedicated campaign of tactics including on-air, social media and digital outreach will support the partnership, aiding in VOICES study recruitment.
The American Cancer Society has a history of working to reduce the unacceptably high burden of cancer in all populations. Visit HERE to learn more about the campaign and how to participate in the study.
