With the new Oura Ring 4 launching in October, it was pretty much guaranteed that the outgoing Oura Ring 3 would get a hefty discount for Black Friday 2024. And boy did it happen. From now until 2 December, Oura has slashed up to £200 off the Horizon version of the Ring 3, with each colourway dropping to its lowest ever price.
When our fitness director Andrew Tracey tested the Oura Ring 3 in November last year, he said, ‘this compact, sleek device stands out – or rather, doesn’t stand out – as a wearable that claims to provide actionable insights into sleep quality, activity levels and overall wellbeing’. As someone who is sceptical of this genre of tech, his full review is as nuanced as you could expect.
However, with the Oura Ring 4 now out, and starting at £349, are you better off buying the newest version?
Cost
This Oura Ring 3 Black Friday deal is a good saving in terms of price. At £249, or £50 off for the Heritage ring in Black and Sliver, that’s the lowest the Ring 3 has ever been and £100 less than the current cheapest version of the brand new Oura Ring 4.
It means you could buy the older device, bank the difference and fund the £5.99 per month Oura app membership for a whole 16 months.
For the pricier Horizon version in Gold and Rose Gold, the savings are even bigger. This Black Friday deal puts the Ring 3 Heritage versions up to £200 less than the Oura Ring 4 in the same colourways, which equates to over two years of Oura’s app membership.
Gen 4 Upgrades
However, if you are tempted to buy the Oura Ring 3 this Black Friday, it’s worth weighing up the reality of buying what is now a previous generation device.
For now, the experience as a user is virtually identical whether you own the Ring 3 or Ring 4. Other than the Ring 4’s slimmer profile and recessed sensors, the former iteration also gets the new automatic heart rate monitoring, app redesign and updated stress tracking.
The Oura Ring 4 is more accurate than the Ring 3 – at least according to Oura. The Ring 4’s new all-titanium interior and recessed sensors are said to reduce data gaps and result in more consistent and accurate in-app insights. It’s a tricky one because the Ring 3 is still a viable device, but with these upgrades now available, it does feel a little outdated.
The slimmer profile and improved comfort of the Ring 4 amplify the differences. With no protruding sensors in the interior of the device, the new iteration is more comfortable and therefore practical to wear 24/7. You might not notice the difference, but if you do, then buying the Ring 3 may be a decision you regret.
The Oura Ring 4 also has a longer battery life, lasting up to eight days instead of the seven with the Ring 3. But that’s something that I expect a lot of people could probably live with.
It’s also not like you’re missing out on a new screen, software enhancements or drastic design upgrades, like when new smartwatches get released. Smart rings are simple tech. They are essentially a bunch of sensors and a battery, so new iterations and hardware upgrades take longer to come out. The most important upgrades are with the app and the algorithm that interprets your data – which, at least for now, Oura has rolled out to the Ring 3.
