Reparations will not be coming to California citizens any time soon, apparently, after key legislation disintegrated over the weekend, and WWL’s Newell Normand discussed the events on his Tuesday show.
“This was the weekend that everyone anticipated that a series of reparations bills were going to make it through the California Assembly,” Normand said. “It turns out that [California Governor] Gavin Newsom, who is overwhelmingly supportive of this, legislation… kind of reneged on that deal.”
Normand detailed what he feels went wrong, saying it came down to a quid pro quo of support for the Democrats’ nominee for President.
“It all kind of fell apart,” he said. “A lot of threats going back and forth as to whether or not the individuals impacted here were going to be voting for President Biden, who was running, and now Vice President Kamala Harris, as to whether or not they would be the recipient of the support of these individuals.
These folks said unless you signed all of these bills, you get on these bills, you support these bills. Governor Gavin Newsom, you will be putting the Democratic Party at risk, because those of us who believe that we are entitled to reparations will not be voting for the Democrat of choice in the Presidential election.”
