Community and business leaders and stakeholders gathered this week for Newark Forward – an event designed to showcase the Brick City as a premier destination for business owners, industry captains and entrepreneurs.
Held at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) Oct. 12, the event was hosted by Mayor Ras Baraka, Invest Newark and the African American Chamber of Commerce of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.
The activities covered at the event included:
- Moderated panel discussions offering details on the benefits of doing business in Newark;
- Speakers sharing insights into a city-built, comprehensive commerce ecosystem;
- Case studies shared by local business owners,
- A luncheon and networking sessions; and
- A featured fireside chat with Baraka and AACC of PA, NJ, & DE President and CEO Regina Hairston.
Baraka noted that beyond Newark’s advantages as a transportation hub and its proximity to major markets, the city is home to world-class academia and limitless talent in every field.
“It’s the perfect environment for a new generation of residents seeking a dynamic urban community with businesses, goods and services representing a full spectrum of global diversity,” said Baraka. “That’s part of what makes us stand out – but most important is that we support our businesses with forward thinking initiatives and incentives. Newark is a family. When you come to Newark, you are part of a larger ecosystem that exists to help you succeed.”
Hairston pointed out that the event derived from a conversation following the AACC’s National Convening of Black Mayors – describing the city as a “bright showcase of a multi-faceted jewel beckoning businesses of every ilk.”
“Newark is so much more than storefronts and available spaces for work and commerce. It is a beating heart, standing ready to embrace entrepreneurs and organization with the nuts-and-bolts support of economic incentives, as well as decades-old experiential wisdom and future-looking, outside-the-box innovation,” said Hairston. “I’m here today to encourage everyone to bring their businesses to Newark and reap the benefits awaiting you.”
“The AACCNJ is honored to participate in this very significant event,” said AACC New Jersey Founder, President and CEO John Harmon Sr., who thanked Baraka for convening the discussion – calling him a strong, constant, and trusted leader and voice. “Let’s move Newark forward – together.”
Bayoh and Cos. founder and CEO Adenah Bayoh said she was proud to participate as a panelist working to showcase “our great city” as a premier business destination.
“Newark is not just our city; it is a canvas of opportunity where business owners and industry leaders come together to paint their dreams with innovation and resilience, making it a premier destination for those who dare to redefine the future,” said Bayoh. “By showcasing the unique opportunities and vibrant ecosystem here, we can attract and inspire the next generation of leaders to invest in Newark, drive economic progress, and shape the city’s future.”
Invest Newark CEO Marcus Randolph said that the Newark Forward event provided an incredible outlet for Newark business owners to share their stories with leaders and entrepreneurs from across the region.
“We remain here to support entrepreneurs who are looking to grow and invest in Newark,” said Randolph.
