PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — Downtown Phoenix is celebrating Black History Month with a first-of-its-kind event in the city called ‘CAN I KICK IT.’
“We’ve hosted all kinds of events downtown for years and we wanted to do something different to support black history month,” said Downtown Phoenix Inc. Marketing Director Skyler Scott
Hundreds came to Civic Space Park on Saturday for a night of music, entertainment, and culture that also featured more than a dozen vendors from local black-owned businesses. “This is a beautiful event here in a beautiful space, so I think it really showcases our city,” said IV Hydra Health of the Valley Owner Corlisa Sturdivant.
There was also a showing of Marvel’s Black Panther while a DJ did a live score of the movie. “Showing the Black Panther movie, which I love,” said Sturdivant.
As the sun set and gave way to stars on Saturday night, people spent the evening coming together for Black History Month. “We can provide an environment that is inclusive and exciting and welcoming, and that anybody can enjoy it,” said Scott. “I think the whole nation can get together and celebrate black history,” added Sturdivant.
