National Women’s Political Caucus to Host Free Film Screening and Discussion on Juneteenth

The National Women’s Political Caucus Greater Pasadena Area is hosting a free public film screening and discussion featuring the 85-minute documentary, “Respect My Crown: The Rise of African American Women in California Politics,” on Wednesday, June 19, at John Muir High School, located at 1905 Lincoln Ave. in Pasadena.

Held on Juneteenth, the film showing explores the significant contributions and sacrifices made by African American women leaders in politics, labor, and community activism in California, as they battled race and gender barriers in pursuit of equality and political power.

Attendees should arrive by 5:30 p.m. to check in at the registration area, as the film will begin promptly at 6 p.m.

“Respect My Crown” highlights the challenges and aspirations of African American women achievers, both living and deceased, as they navigated obstacles and worked for the betterment of their communities and the state. 

The film includes interviews from 34 remarkable women who are leaders in their fields, and intends to show the role of intersectionality in politics and public service in the state of California, according to event organizers.

The film also serves as an archival project of the Mervyn M. Dymally African American Political and Economic Institute and a study of Black women in politics for the California Black Women’s Collective Empowerment Institute, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focusing on improving the lives of Black women and girls throughout the state.

Following the screening, attendees will hear from the film’s director and a panel.
