MUSC is now a Pediatric Ready Emergency Department.

MUSC Health Black River Medical Center is proud to announce it has been designated as a Pediatric Ready Emergency Department by the South Carolina EMS for Children Advisory Committee. This prestigious designation recognizes the hospital’s commitment to providing high-quality, family-centered emergency care that meets rigorous national guidelines for pediatric health care.

The designation illustrates readiness to deliver specialized emergency services to children and families in the region. By meeting these standards, MUSC Health Black River Medical Center now joins an elite group of health care facilities across South Carolina prioritizing child-focused emergency response capabilities and preparedness. It is one of only 10 Pediatric Ready Emergency Departments in South Carolina, and one of two in the Pee Dee Region.

“This designation reinforces our commitment to every child and family who walks through our doors,” said Allen Abernethy, executive director of Black River Medical Center. “Our team has continuously worked to ensure that we meet and exceed the highest standards of pediatric emergency care, providing peace of mind in our community.”

A Pediatric Ready Emergency Department is ready to handle the unique needs of children during medical emergencies, equipped with specially trained staff and procedures to manage a range of pediatric conditions effectively. It also adds invaluable resources to the area, enhancing local access to high-quality care close to home.

“This is yet another example of MUSC’s commitment, focus and dedication to improving outcomes for our community in general and for our most vulnerable patients in particular,” said Christo Courban, medical director of emergency medicine at MUSC Health Florence/Marion/Black River Medical Centers. “We are determined to bring the best care to our patients in communities we serve.”
