The Maui Police Department have identified the 53-year-old man as Sione Paletua of Wailuku. MPD continues to extend its condolences to Mr. Paletua’s family and friends.
On Monday, July 22, 46-year-old Seniola Kafoa Jr. of Lahaina was charged with Attempted Murder in the Second Degree. Kafoa remains in police custody with his bail set at $500,000/
The investigation remains ongoing and no other information has been released at this time.

Kaanapali, Maui (Island News) – The Maui Police Department (MPD) arrested a man in connection to a murder investigation that occurred on Honoapiilani Highway in Kaanapali, Maui on Saturday, July 20, 2024.
On Saturday at approximately 11:46 a.m. Lahaina Patrol Officers responded to 2010 Honoapiilani Highway in Kaanapali. Upon their arrival, a bystander led the officers to a man who was seen to be breathing but was unresponsive and had suffered from a severe injury to his arm.
One of the Patrol Officers applied a tourniquet to the man’s arm and conducted life-saving measures until fire and medic personnel arrived on the scene to take over.
The man, a 53-year-old from Lahaina, was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition. However, he later succumbed to his injuries before arrival. The man’s identity is currently being withheld for 24 hours to allow his family an opportunity to notify their extended family and friends.
A preliminary investigation revealed that an eyewitness saw a 46-year-old Lahaina man standing over the victim’s body before fleeing the scene in a red 2007 Honda Element.
At approximately 1:08 p.m., officers located the Honda that was abandoned off Honoapiilani Highway in the Olowalu area.
At around 4:03 p.m. SRT and Lahaina Patrol Officers located the 46-year-old man at Honokawai Park where he was placed under arrest for Murder in the Second Degree. The man remains in police custody, pending charges.
The investigation is ongoing.
