On January 22, 2025, ICTJ launched its digital campaign, “Reparations Build Justice”, aiming to raise awareness about reparations and their vital contribution to sustainable peace and justice, particularly in countries grappling with legacies of mass atrocities.
Indeed, in countries that have experienced armed conflict, dictatorship, or political violence, many victims of human rights violations or their families are waiting for justice. In addition to criminal accountability, they demand acknowledgment and reparation. A core dimension of transitional justice, reparations are essential to redressing past harms and rebuilding the lives of victims and their communities.
The campaign intends to open a conversation with members of ICTJ’s online community about reparations, what they mean for victims of mass atrocities, and the challenges to delivering them. As a part of it, the ICTJ team will share dozens of dynamic posts on its social media channels, including animations, interviews with ICTJ experts, and infographics, that are sequenced to explain the intricacies of reparations and to invite members to interact and share their reflections. The posts will also highlight ICTJ’s current and past work around the world helping victims obtain reparation, as well as its vast resources on the topic, such as publications, films, and expert commentaries.
“Too many victims are still seeking justice and repair for what they have suffered. That’s why we are launching this campaign,” explains ICTJ Executive Director Fernando Travesí. “We want to send a clear message: There can be no justice without reparations for victims of massive human rights violations.”
The Reparations Build Justice campaign runs through the first week of March. Please visit us on Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Medium, and Blue Sky to learn more about reparations and to join the conversation.
