COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – The African American Male Wellness Agency is focusing on women this week.

AAMWA is holding its annual Uplift Her event on Thursday.

Uplift Her aims to reduce health disparities among Black women, who are at increased risk of death from breast cancer, heart disease, and childbirth.

The free event takes place from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at St. Charles Prep School on East Broad Street in Bexley. At the event, women can receive free screenings and links to healthcare resources.

A recent study by the Kaiser Family Foundation said 10% of Black Americans don’t have health insurance, compared to 6% of white Americans. Also, a study in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine said Black patients were 40% less likely to receive medication for acute pain from healthcare providers.
