Evanston prepares for next round of reparations payments

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Evanston is preparing to disburse its next round of reparations benefits.

The city next month is expected to announce the order in which hundreds of Black residents will receive assistance. They are the children or grandchildren of Evanston residents who were affected by a redlining era in the city between 1919 and 1969.

Councilmember Krissie Harris says Evanston has learned a lot since it became the first U.S. city to launch a reparations plan back in 2019. The city has offered housing assistance and cash payments.

Harris said she’s glad to hear New York has begun studying the issue of reparations.

“I’m excited for anybody who can pay a debt that is more than financial — it’s moral,” she said.
