Culpeper Downtown Trick-or-Treat
Culpeper Renaissance Inc. and Culpeper Downtown businesses invite all the little ghouls and goblins for a fun and safe trick or treating experience in Historic Downtown Culpeper 5-6 p.m. on Tuesday.
Participating businesses, CRI, Culpeper Police and additional community partners will provide Halloween treats and other goodies.
Come dressed to scare or delight and have a howling good time while staying safe in Culpeper Downtown this Halloween.

National Prescription Drug Takeback Day
Safely dispose of prescription medicines that are not needed during a drug takeback event 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the main entrance to UVA Health Culpeper Medical Center, 501 Sunset Lane. Injectable, syringes, needles and EpiPens will not be collected. Other items that will not be collected are compressed cylinders or aerosols (asthma inhalers), iodine-containing medications, thermometers, alcohol and illicit drugs.
Lake Anna real estate agent wins Aqua Award
Lake Anna Homes Realty agent Mike Stevens recently received the Aqua Award for exceptional industry achievements at the National Agent Summit for Lake Homes Realty.
The Aqua Award is given to agents with a total sales transaction volume of $3.5-$10 million between Sept. 1, 2022, and Aug. 31, 2023. The total transaction volume is the sum of the property sale price of each transaction side represented, even if the side represented was shared with another agent, according to a business release.
Stevens got the award at the summit, held Oct. 10-13 in Birmingham, Alabama.

NAACP Eclipse Awards tonight in Orange
The Orange County African American Historical Society will hold the 2023 Eclipse Awards and banquet at 4:30 p.m. today in the cafeteria at Orange County High School.
In person for the first time since 2019, the annual Eclipse Awards are presented to members of the Orange County community who have demonstrated a lifetime commitment to the advancement of the African American community.
This year’s honorees are Gloria J. Gilmore, Jesse Magruder, Mary F. Minkoff, Ernestine Reid, Juliet Daniel and Sakhile Mthethwa. Tickets are $40.
Realtors report: median home price $501K
Despite a backdrop of approximately 7% mortgage rates, the pace of real estate sales in the Greater Piedmont footprint picked up in September, compared to last year, coming in at 130 homes, according to a release from Greater Piedmont Realtors President Kelly Thornton.
Pending sales in the region covering Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison and Rappahannock eked out a nominal gain of 1.5% or 135 homes/contracts. New listings dropped nearly 10% compared to last year.
Not surprising, the pick-up in sales and decrease in new inventory caused a 6% decline in total active listings, Thornton said. The pickup in sales activity and tightening of available inventory is undoubtedly the cause for the median sales price to continue to rise, increasing by nearly 12% to $501,500.
In a confusing twist, while new listings have decreased, the actual months of supply increased by over 26% to 2.4 months, still well below what is necessary for a “healthy” market, according to Thornton.
“Overall, the statistics for our footprint paint an incomplete picture, as the individual county-specific data can and does differ widely,” she said.
Greater Piedmont Realtors is a trade association representing 700 industry professionals in Fauquier, Culpeper, Rappahannock and Madison counties.
Hydrant flushing downtown next week
The Town of Culpeper Public Works Department will be performing unidirectional flushing of hydrants in the downtown area daily 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. starting Sunday through Wednesday, Nov. 1, weather permitting.
A work zone will be in place during operations. Motorists are asked to pay attention to changing conditions in this primary corridor and drive slowly around this work zone.
Some discoloration of water should be expected, but should be temporary. Should water discoloration be prolonged, call Public Works at 540/825-0285.
Buy A Bird Thanksgiving food campaign
The Culpeper Food Closet is once again holding its annual Buy-a-Bird campaign to make sure families in Culpeper can sit down to a special holiday meal.
“Wouldn’t it be wonderful, as you sit down to your family Thanksgiving meal, to know that you have provided a full meal to a family in Culpeper that faces food insecurity?” according to a Food Closet release.
For $25 per meal, supporters can Buy-A-Bird and all the sides to help their neighbors in need have a special holiday without worrying about the cost. Consider buying several as the goal is to help 650 families this year. Checks may be sent to Culpeper Food Closet, P.O. Box 343, Culpeper VA 22701.

Cedar Mountain Battlefield work day volunteers sought
The American Battlefield Trust and the Cedar Mountain Battlefield Foundation are hosting a volunteer workday 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3, at the battlefield, located at 9465 General Winder Road in Rapidan.
Interested volunteers are being sought to help with trail maintenance, spread woodchips, work on the old-timey split rail fence and manage a sea of invasive plants. Experienced staff will train and supervise volunteers on several safe and effective methods for controlling woody invasive trees, shrubs and vines such as multiflora rose, autumn olive and Japanese honeysuckle.
American Battlefield Trust will provide lunch at 12:30 p.m. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be held on Monday, Nov. 13.
Parking is available on-site. Look for signs at the entrance to the park. Volunteers are asked to please dress for the weather and be prepared to hike around the woods. Wear long pants, a long-sleeve shirt and closed toed shoes and preferably rugged gear that can stand up to working around thorny multiflora rose. Please bring water and snacks. Volunteers can bring work gloves and/or eye protection.
