INDIANAPOLIS — Less than 6 percent of doctors in the U.S. are Black, and experts say it’s impacting public health.
So one hospital here in Indy is helping Black students learn more about the field.
Students will get their own white coat and stethoscope this year before breaking into group sessions, getting hands-on experience of working in health care and hearing from doctors at Community Health.
Leaders say so far over 300 students have registered.
“If I can do it, certainly anyone can do it and that it’s not unattainable and that it doesn’t matter where you live, where you’re from, as long as you’re shown the opportunity, that you can take advantage of it and that you can give back to your community and do good as well,” Keith Banks, physician at Community Health Network, said.
The event is this Saturday, Oct. 28, from 8:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lawrence Central High School.
