Columbia’s inaugural ‘Mom’s Market’: amplifying Black maternal health and challenges

The City of Columbia, in partnership with the Black Maternal Health Collective, is gearing up to host its inaugural “Mom’s Market” in honor of Black Maternal Health Week. The event aims to raise awareness about the significant challenges faced by black women in maternal healthcare, particularly in South Carolina.

Scheduled for Saturday, April 6, from 11 am to 3 pm at the Drew R. Wellness Center located at 2101 Walker Solomon Way, the “Mom’s Market” will feature a lineup of distinguished speakers and panelists. Among the speakers are Councilwoman Aditi Bussells, renowned musician DajaStar, health advocate Yadri Goodwin, and community leader Kim Smith. Moderating the event will be Rho Sims, the founder of the Black Maternal Health Collective.

The event will also include a panel discussion with experts such as Latoya Lindsey, JaMel Morant, Dequena Niles, Tanya Ambrose, Kyra Ledwell, and Karen Nolen. These panelists will delve into critical topics related to maternal health, including mental health support, loss recovery, community-centered birthing practices, and nutrition during pregnancy and postpartum periods.

A diverse range of vendors specializing in mental health services, loss support groups, community birthing initiatives, and nutrition will be present to provide information and resources for mothers, families, and babies. Attendees can expect to gain insights into maternal health rights and access valuable resources to navigate the various stages of motherhood.

The “Mom’s Market” is a significant initiative aimed at addressing the disparities in maternal healthcare and providing a platform for education, support, and advocacy.
