CJCC launches inaugural conference on improving the South Carolina criminal justice system

Leaders from across South Carolina met in North Charleston last week to discuss ways to improve the state’s criminal justice system.

The one-day conference was hosted by the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC) and The Charleston Forum at Trident Technical College on Oct. 20. It focused on safety, fairness, and justice.

Experts led discussions on the most promising practices used across the country.

“The criminal justice system is complicated,” CJCC Director Ellen Steinberg said. “It’s very complex. We recognized that we all want the same thing. We want a system that’s fair. We want a system just and equitable for every single person.”

“There are areas we we need to pay attention to, that we can do so much better,” she continued. “We can do it together. We all have the same goal.”

This was the CJCC’s first year hosting the conference.
