CEO of Commonwealth National Bank says what Hall of Fame honor means for bank

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – The Mobile Chamber will recognize minority-owned businesses during the annual Eagle Awards Luncheon on Friday.

CEO of Commonwealth National Bank said his bank has won multiple Eagle Awards throughout the years and was the very first Hall of Fame winner in 2006.

“Commonwealth is the only African American-owned bank in Mobile,” he told us.

To win an Eagle Award, a business must meet certain criteria, including having an outstanding impact on the community and local economy.

“We’ve got a program that we started with the city—the legacy loan program where we’re providing financing to minority contractors working on the airport project and you know, working with the city,” he said.

“We were created to serve the historically underserved African American community and that recognition shows that we were doing the things that we were created to do,” said King.

King explained why minority-owned businesses are important to Mobile.

“What we want to see is a strong Mobile—a strong, diverse community…you know an inclusive Mobile where everybody is winning, everybody is growing, and everybody is seeing the results,” he said.

King said he is proud of Commonwealth’s mission and the example the company is to the rest of the community.

“Our goal at Commonwealth is to make wealth common by turning common opportunity into generational wealth,” he said.

King said he looks forward to the Eagle Awards luncheon and ceremony on Friday.
