Capital Health Signs On As Sponsor Of Newtown’s Black & White Dinner

NEWTOWN, PA — Capital Health has signed on as the presenting sponsor of the 8th annual Newtown Black & White Dinner, which benefits the historic Newtown Theatre. This year’s event is being held on Saturday, Sept. 7.

In homage to the theatre’s roots as the country’s oldest continuously operating movie theatre, up to 1,000 diners dressed only in black and white will gather on Newtown Borough’s North State Street for a one-of-a-kind alfresco picnic held in the middle of the street.

It’s Newtown’s social event of the year.

“Recognizing that the arts play a vital role in healing and well-being, Capital Health is honored to be the presenting sponsor of this fundraising event for the Newtown Theatre,” said Rebecca Kelly, Capital Health’s Director of Strategic Partnerships. “We’re committed to supporting the communities we serve and remain dedicated in our ongoing efforts to be a valued neighbor in the region.”

Rebecca Kelly, Capital Health’s Director of Strategic Partnerships, with Andrew Smith, executive director of the Newtown Theatre.

“I’m thrilled to have Capital Health’s support as this year’s presenting sponsor of the Black & White Dinner,” said Newtown Theatre Executive Director Andrew Smith. “This event is about bringing the community together to celebrate and support our historic theatre, and Capital Health is a true partner in that effort.”

The Black & White Dinner begins at 5:30 p.m. when diners arrive to find tables draped in white linens stretching hundreds of feet down the street. Guests can mingle, decorate their tables, and enjoy live jazz music prior to dinner, which begins at 6:30 p.m. Dinner will conclude at 8 p.m. with a communal, Instagram-worthy lighting of sparklers by the diners. Following dinner, the theatre will host a special dueling pianos concert inside the theatre (tickets sold separately).

For this event, diners are to dress only in black and white (formal wear is absolutely not required) and bring everything they need for dinner under the stars, including food, utensils, and optional black and white décor. This year, diners can choose to pre-order dinner prepared by Newtown’s own Ardana Food & Drink for an additional charge when they purchase tickets.

Creativity will be rewarded with prizes for the Best Dressed Man and Woman, Best Dressed Group, Most Elegant Table, and Most Creative Table.

The Newtown Theatre is a historic, 250-seat theater that dates to the early 1800s. Originally built as a hall for town gatherings and a non-sectarian church for traveling ministers, it soon became a center of entertainment in Newtown.

Throughout the 1850s, the theater hosted anti-slavery meetings, which included apperances by Lucretia Mott and Frederick Douglass. In 1906 the first movie was shown, making it America’s oldest continuously operating movie theater. Today, the theater has expanded its programming to include concerts, comedy shows, live theatre and other special events.
