California’s grand reparations plan does not include cash payments (for now), but it includes something equally destructive: overt discrimination.
California legislators introduced several bills as part of their reparations plan, ranging from worthy of debate (restitution for property taken by race-based eminent domain) to downright silly (a “formal apology” by the governor and legislature for crimes against humanity). One proposal, though, is very clearly damaging and certainly unconstitutional.
That proposal would allow the state to fund programs for “increasing the life expectancy of, improving educational outcomes for, or lifting out of poverty specific groups based on race, color, ethnicity, national origin, or marginalized genders, sexes, or sexual orientations.” Democratic Assemblyman Corey Jackson is calling on voters to support changing the state constitution so that this would be possible.
In other words, Democratic legislators in California want to lift people out of poverty or improve their educational experiences, but only if they have state-approved skin colors. Not only that, but by shoehorning in “marginalized genders, sexes, or sexual orientations” into that proposal, they are making it clear that their plan for slavery reparations is a Trojan horse to force through more money for gay people and transgender people. It isn’t about slavery; it is just another woke giveaway for state-endorsed demographic groups.

Even without that, though, the stated purpose of the reparations package is destructive. Again, it calls for funding to help people in poverty or with poor education options, but only if the state approves of their skin color. California’s answer to discrimination in the form of slavery, which ended 159 years ago, is to start discriminating against more people now. And this is seen not just as a normal idea by California Democrats but as a morally justified and even necessary one.
Just like taking money from taxpayers who had nothing to do with slavery to give it to people 159 years removed from slavery, this is a destructive idea that will further inflame racial divides and make both California and the country worse. Believe it or not, discrimination is never the right answer, especially when politicians are proposing it as a “solution” to discrimination that ended over a century ago.
