The 2024 Mental Health Equity and Liberation Summit, hosted by the Black Women’s Mental Health Institute will be on July 11 at Birmingham Botanical Gardens. The hybrid event is meant to tackle the important topic of mental health during National Minority Mental Health Month.

For those attending virtually, the fee is $50, and for those attending in person, it will be $75. There will be a different price range for mental health clinicians. Today, July 8, is the last day to register for the event. The theme is Healing Justice and Collective Wellness.

Black Women’s Mental Health Institute Founder and CEO Dr. Nadia Johnson said events like these are vital for the health care landscape.

“It spreads awareness by exploring what it means to provide culturally responsive and equitable health care,” said Johnson.

There will be a wide range of speakers from diverse backgrounds showcasing their research on mental health and how it affects different communities.

“There are all these different forms of systemic inequities that impact access to care but also impact mental health and holistic health,” Johnson said.

Dr. Regina James is the keynote speaker for the summit. James is medical director for the American Psychiatric Association and chief of the Division of Diversity and Health Equity.

“Having conversations and events like this help provide insight into what it means to provide culturally responsive care to meet the unique needs of every population,” said Johnson.
