NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WJAR) — February is Black History Month!
It’s a time for celebration, reflection and insightful conversations.
NBC 10’s Temi-Tope Adeleye sat down with Doctor Justina Perry to discuss her role in supporting Black-owned businesses on the South Coast.
Perry owns Oshun Physical Therapy and Pelvic Health on Ashley Boulevard in New Bedford.
“It’s kind of putting my two loves together, entrepreneurship and physical therapy. Being able to be a physical therapy owner gives me that creative outlet and allows me to take some leadership,” said Perry.
Perry is busy running a clinic and supporting more than 250 other Black-owned businesses on the South Coast through “Buy Black New Bedford.”
The foundation was formed almost three years ago during COVID-19 and the racial justice protests.
“It started out as a need, around this time people were looking for ways to support the Black businesses [in the] community,” said Perry. “So, we just made the directory really public and from there. It created a network, strengthened a network of businesses here on the South Coast. “
Izzy’s Cape Verdean Style Restaurant on Spring Street in New Bedford is just one of the many businesses that benefit from the support of “Buy Black New Bedford.”
Izidora Andrade owns Izzy’s Restaurant, running the restaurant with her family. They serve authentic Cape Verdean-style food and more.
Andrade’s son Servulo Pires said organizations like “Buy Black New Bedford” make a difference.
“They help a lot of Black businesses…[whether] it’s from advertisement to just exposure,” said Pires.
The “Buy Black New Bedford” has been known for creating easier access to resources for those looking to start or sustain their small business.
Ongoing support from community members like 91-year-old Salah Matteos has kept them going.
“Some of the best food in the entire area and that’s why I come so often,” said Matteos. “Plus they’re in a very marvelous location.”
This month, they are echoing the importance of supporting other Black-owned businesses all year round, in and out of New Bedford.
“Just keep supporting the Black community,” said Pires.
