BUFFALO, N.Y. — In celebration of Black History Month, The Ice at Canalside is having pop-up shops for Black-owned businesses and a clothing drive.
Each weekend in February, a Black-owned business will set up shop in an igloo beside the ice rink. Music on the Canalside ice will feature a playlist exclusively dedicated to Black artists.
On Sundays, $1 from each admission will be donated organizations, including the Colored Musicians Club (Feb. 4), Colored Girls Bike Club (Feb. 11), Black Boys Read Too (Feb. 18), and the African American Cultural Center (Feb. 25).
Anybody who donates a piece of winter clothing will also receive a free skate rental.
“At the Ice at Canalside, we like to take this time each year to celebrate the contributions of our city’s Black-owned businesses and dedicated community organizations,” Lauren Ford, general manager of the Buffalo Waterfront, said in a statement.
“We’re looking forward to a great final month at the ice to cap off the 2023-2024 season.”
