Black Heidi dives deep into the mental health crisis with new single and video “I’m Fine”

Black Heidi proves to be a master of satire on her latest single and video “I’m Fine”, as she chronicles her personal struggles during the Covid-19 pandemic, and the subsequent challenges to her mental health caused by the lockdown.

Nothing like a trip into the neurosis of depression to warm you up on a winter’s day. In reality, Black Heidi’s upbeat track gives you everything you’d want out of an unfortunate series of events (aka the worst pandemic of the 20th century) – a groovy call to get you up and out of your bed.

The repetitive nature of the chorus drives home the lyrics “I only shower 3 times a week / and I’m always in bed, even when I’m not sleeping,”. It’s a sombre sentiment, but sung through the lens of joyous pop.

The music video, directed by Ulrich Fischer, is a wonderful ode to Heidi’s outlook on life. It’s a journey through her personal hell, so to speak, where apathy and a lustless attitude towards life starts to show its ugly head. But Heidi sips on a glass of wine and eventually puts it all behind her, to jump on stage and do what she does best.

It may have sarcastic undertones, but “I’m Fine” is still hopeful in its irony. You just need to look for it.
