Non-profit bringing mental health to the forefront in black, brown communities

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – A Rochester non-profit organization supporting youth in black and brown communities is hosting a community healing workshop on Thursday at the new local bookstore Griot Arts.

‘The Power of Your Story’ is an event hosted by the organization Journie to provide a comfortable space for people in need of mental health support.

Nashauna Johnson Lenoir is the founder of the organization and says growing up, she didn’t have someone with the same cultural perspective to talk to while dealing with her mental health.

“With dealing with mental health, a lot of people think nobody cares about me,” Lenoir said.

Now Lenoir wants youth today to know that there is a resource for them with this event.

“I think the number one thing is to let them know that we care, we’re here and you’re not alone,” she said.

Everyone in the community is welcome at the workshop.

Participants will hear and share stories, develop coping skills, and understand the importance of seeking help while recognizing when to ask for help.

There will also be a raffle to win Journie merchandise and local business gift cards.
