NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) – The Greater Augusta Historically Black Colleges and University (HBCU) Alumni Alliance hosted its 10th annual health fair and 10k walk on Saturday.
They’re working to raise money for scholarship money for students headed to HBCUs.
This year’s event was the main fundraiser to provide that scholarship money.
The alliance says to date awarded over $70,000 in scholarships, along with making donations to Paine College, Golden Harvest Food Bank, the Jessye Norman School of the Arts and other organizations.
At the event, the president of the alumni alliance spoke about the once-in-a-year event.
“Each year, we get a bigger crowd. We think if we keep this up, people will be engaged in the community more. We want to create community involvedness and wellness in the community and give out scholarships,” said Raymond McCoy.
The Greater Augusta HBCU Alliance was founded in February 2013 and now has 22 HBCU alumni chapters involved.
