901 Now: Black Business Association president shares importance of fueling Black businesses

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – August marks National Black Business Month, an opportunity to support and celebrate Black-owned businesses.

It’s right on time, as the Black Business Association of Memphis (BBA) celebrates their 50th anniversary of empowering Black businesses in the Memphis community.

“We’re working to fill some of those gaps and have a more prosperous set of businesses so we can have a better and more prosperous Memphis.” Ernest Strickland said.

BBA is dedicated to advocating and supporting Black entrepreneurs in Memphis.

From Mom-and-Pop shops to large construction companies, President and CEO of BBA Ernest Strickland said seeing Black businesses prosper in the 901 is a true testament to the work they do at BBA.

“When you see these businesses start off as small shops and now, they are large operations, and hiring individuals, special calling to be in this space,” Strickland said.

BBA currently assists 1,200 members through education, innovative programs, and their biggest contribution – support.

”Sometimes you really need someone to sing your praises,” Strickland said. “And make sure your voice can be elevated. We’ve had companies that have won contracts, government and corporate, because of the advocacy work that the organization has done.”

With half a century under its belt, all eyes are on the past, present and future of BBA.

Strickland said looking over the association’s 50 years of progress is motivating and a testament to what having a successful business can do for the entire community.

”Helping a company being able to take care of their family, leave a legacy for their children, and to be a pillar in their community. That’s the type of impact that we want to see,” Strickland said.

BBA is hosting a series of impactful events throughout August to celebrate 50 years of service.

Friday, BBA will host The Soul of Connection: Networking Mixer featuring A Conversation with David Porter, Stax Records music executive.

Attendees will strengthen their business relationships and forge new connections that will help drive the success of Black businesses in Memphis.
