August is the month that Black-owned businesses are recognized and celebrated.
National Black Business Month was founded 20 years ago. But a little over a year ago, Crystal’s Zen and Juice opened in the business hub that is Jackson’s historic train depot. The owner of the vegan food and juice bar lounge, Crystal Brown, shared with 39 News that her restaurant was well-received in Jackson.
“I feel empowered,” Brown said. “I feel like a leader. I feel like my services are needed. I just think that it is important for African-American people to see and have a representation of themselves in these positions.”
Brown told us that resources in the community, such as the Soul Collective entrepreneurial incubator and the Jackson Madison County African American Chamber of Commerce, are helpful tools for Black creatives and entrepreneurs.
Right across the street in the historic Neely House, are several other black-owned establishments: Skillet Junction, Peppermint Addie’s, and Pure Scent Essence Candle Bar.
The owner of Pure Scent Essence, Shaketha Mebane, shared with us that she started out as a hobbyist at the Farmer’s Market and built her business with the help of her customers.
“I don’t look at it as being a black business owner,” Mebane said. “If it wasn’t for the whole community, I wouldn’t be able to survive, period.”
