July is National Minority Mental Health Month, and the Black Women’s Mental Health Institute will be hosting a conference to bring awareness.
The event is the eighth annual Mental Health Equity and Liberation Summit. It is set to take place at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens on July 11.
The Summit will feature Black, Latinx, Asian, LGBTQIA+ and Indigenous speakers who will discuss their perspectives on the topic of mental health equity and culturally responsive mental health care. The theme will be Healing Justice and Collective Wellness.
Founder and CEO of the Black Women’s Mental Health Institute Dr. Nadia Richardson will be the opener for this public event.
Some noteworthy speakers are:
- Regina James, MD Deputy Medical Director: Chief, Division of Diversity and Health Equity American Psychiatric Association
- Councilor LaTonya A. Tate: Birmingham City Council, District 9 Chair, Public Safety Committee
- Representative Phillip Ensler: Alabama State Representative, House District 74
- Norman H. Kim PhD: Co-Founder and Principal Institute for Antiracism and Equity in Mental Health
- Councilor Crystal N. Smitherman: Birmingham City Council, District 6
- Representative Rex Reynolds: Alabama State Representative, House District 21
